The Guided Wave Radar Level Gauge Radar Level Transmitter functions by emitting a precise microwave pulse. This signal travels through space at the speed of light until it interacts with the surface of the substance being measured. Upon hitting the surface, a portion of the pulse's energy is reflected back and picked up by the transmitting antenna itself.

 

The duration between the transmission of the pulse and the reception of the echoed signal is directly linked to the span between the antenna and the surface of the substance under scrutiny. This time differential aids in computing the precise distance from the antenna to the surface of the substance being measured.
